Abstract
Objectives: The main objective of this survey
was to know and evaluate the use of lasers in dentistry by a sample of
Algerians practitioners.
Material and Methods: An
anonymous questionnaire was distributed and completed by the dentists (general
and specialize practitioners), who agreed to participate in this survey. To be
considered in the statistical analysis, the questionnaire should be completed
in full. Dental students were not allowed to participate in this survey.
Results: A total of 300 dentists among which
95 (31,66%)specialists and 205 (68,34%) generalists, have participated in this
survey. 123 (41%) of the total number of the participants had only theorical notions about the use of lasers in dentistry. 50
(16,66%) had theorical and practical notions, and 117
(39%) and no notions about lasers.
Only 13 dentists (4,33%) use lasers in their
daily practice. Among the 287(95,66%) practitioners who don't use lasers, 45
(15,79%) of them, have had a training but don't have
the equipment needed for this practice.
Conclusion: Despite the progress achieved in the field of lasers in dentistry, its use is very rare in Algerai. The introduction of this treatment tool in daily practice, by continuing medical education and its integration in continuing education program, may allow spectacular solutions for some conditions where lasers are indicated.
